5 Top Unique Prop Ideas to bring to your Engagement Photoshoot | New England, Florida, and Destination Photography

If you follow us, you know we just LOVE engagement sessions! Its a great time to get to know our couples, gives them some fantastic photos, and most importantly, gives you a chance to get used to being in front of the camera!

Connecticut Engagement Session with Save the Date Sign- Connecticut Wedding Photographer Bright Lights Imagery

Our #1 concern for couples is how to pose, and we like to think of the engagement session as a trial run where we can direct you into non-awkward, natural poses to create candid images (you know, where you feel and look like yourselves). That way, you are pros on your wedding day 🙂

We get asked ‘What can I bring with me to our engagement session?’ a lot, so we decided to put together this blog post for inspiration.

  1. Signs This one is the most common for sure and is great for Save the Date Cards. The possibilities are endless. Paige & Kyle brought this adorable chalk board sign featured above and Jessie & Chris brought this vintage banner to go with their indoor rustic engagement session inside an abandoned building. (We shot there with permission of course! 🙂

2. Bring your Furbabies! Bring your dog, horse, or any other animal you love with you. After all, they are part of the fam too and bringing them to your engagement session is so much fun! You can even get props for them too! Check out this adorable sign and bandana some of our #Brightlightsbrides brought to their session with their pups Bella & Perry!

3. Champagne! or wine! You can plan a picnic or spray champagne like a pro like Kara and Jay did their winter beach engagement session in Hull, Massachusetts. They also brought these adorable custom glasses which were a nice touch!

4. Bundle Up with a Blanket! Estefanie & Michael got nice and cozy during their March engagement session. Blankets add an intimate vibe. We have a whole collection and would be happy to bring some to your session if you would like!

5. Go Sentimental Choose Something meaningful. This is by far my favorite. Did you have a first date at a coffee shop? Go for ice cream? Mini Golf? Kayaking? Recreating this for your engagement session is oh so meaningful and the end results are priceless. Do you have another milestone going on in your life? Did you just buy your first home together? Do some photos at home or in the yard to celebrate. Is there something that you do together and love? Add that to your engagement session experience 🙂

Sarah & Joe bonded over college football while dating and watching together is one of their favorite things to do together so wearing their fav jerseys was a must at their castle engagement session!

The Importance of a Wedding Day Photo Checklist 📝

Blissful Meadows Wedding Uxbridge, MA Photography & Videography by Bright Lights Imagery

I might be a little bit biased, but photos are such an important part of your wedding day. Other than your love, your photos are the only thing you will have after your wedding day. After spending so much time making sure every little detail is perfect, you want to photos to hold onto the memory of your wedding day for decades to come.

It is shocking to me that 40% of brides are unhappy with their photos, and its my mission to make that number much lower.

The last thing you want is for certain moments to be unnoticed or worse, not captured.

Chances are, you have meet with your photographer and have spoken a lot about your wants and needs for your wedding day. You probably went over a timeline to make sure they are there for the important moments which is a great start.

Even though I get to know my couples pretty well before the big day, (I often feel like an extended member of the bridal party!), I/your photographer still won’t know the entire guest list. Your photographer won’t know if you have a group of friends in town for college or if you have a special necklace that is a family heirloom.

Wedding days go by so fast, and you have so many wonderful emotions going on that it can be hard to think about those little things. So, prior to your day, discuss these things with your photographer. Check out this wedding photo day checklist to help keep everything organized! The best part, if its done ahead of time, you won’t have to think about it and can be even more present on your wedding day with your guests 🙂

Bridal party photos

Typically if you have a bridal party the bridesmaids and groomsmen will be hanging our together before the ceremony. There are so many opportunities for great photos! We always start the day with detail photos (invitations, rings, flowers, dress, ext) and then move on to getting ready.

California Wedding at the Iris Gardens Photography by Bright Lights Imagery

During this time, we always love to get some candid photos but will often capture:

  • The bride/bridesmaids in cute robes
  • The bride getting into her dress
  • The bride putting on her shoes
  • The bride putting on jewelry
  • The bride holding the dress
  • Group photo of the ladies helping the bride in her dress
  • The groom/groomsmen getting ready
  • The cheers photo with the bridesmaids or groomsmen
  • Groom putting on jacket
  • Groom adjusting tie, watch, pocket square
  • Groom putting on shoes

You should let your photographer know if you plan on doing letters/gifts with your fiance so they can photograph that. If you are close with your friends and have gifts for them too, let us know! Or maybe you have something unique planned like having the guys play pool while they wait for the ceremony to start. These are those little moments that, if they are not photographed, you might look back through your wedding photos and get a touch disappointed.

Your Ceremony

Typically the moments captured during your ceremony are going to be everyone walking down the aisle, the two of you holding hands at the front, rings being exchanged, vows being read, the first kiss and then the two of you walking down the aisle as newly weds! We also love to photograph some guests as well.

What to tell your photographer:

  • If you have a unity or other cultural ceremony, let them know so they can be prepared to capture it.
  • If you have and speeches or guest speakers

Your Reception

You are officially married-yay!- now it’s time to celebrate! Typical moments captured are, your grand entrance, the first dance, parent dances, speeches, some dancing photos, and bouquet and garter toss, and cake cutting if you are doing those.

Roger Williams Park Casino Wedding in Providence, Rhode Island. Wedding Photography by Bright Lights Imagery

However, this is another one of those times that moments could be missed if you haven’t spoken with your photographer. Once everything has been decided on, think about your reception and all of the moments that you want to be able to look back on for years to come.

I love it when couples make their reception unique to them. If you are doing anything special, you should let your photographer know. For instance, I had one bride that told me she was going to surprise her groom by doing a karaoke song. It was so sweet! At another wedding, the father of the bride brought in some surprise Irish Tap Dancers and by telling me, we made sure I was there to capture it before heading out for the night.

At another wedding, the bride said they were going to make a special announcement to their grandmother. Knowing ahead of time have me a chance to find where she was sitting to we could make sure we could photograph the moment when the time came 🙂

All the other details

If we are friends on instagram (@Brightlightsimagery) you will know how much I LOVE details! I am a very detailed oriented person and I’ve been a bride myself so I totally understand how many hours on pinterest and hours go into finding the perfect flowers, invitations, and details for the day you marry your best friend.

Wedding at Endicott Estate, Dedham, MA Wedding Photography by Bright Lights Imagery

If you have a vision for something, please share it with your creative team! Our goal is to make you have an amazing experience and have photos that become family heirlooms.

One of our brides had a special hanger for her dress. (Sidenote: one great tip is to get a non-plastic hanger for your beautiful dress on your wedding day. The dress is gorgeous and the plastic hanger does not do it justice! You can get a wood hanger or custom hanger online and it is very inexpensive.) Anyways… the bride had a vision of her dress being hung in the barn where her reception was. Because we knew, we planned a little bit of extra time in the schedule to transport the dress and get the photos 🙂

If you want photos of you getting your hair done, or that perfectly posed photo of you putting on a necklace or spritzing your wedding day perfume, speak up! We want you to have those photos if they are going to mean a lot to you. Some couples are ok without them, and that is fine as well!

The easiest way for you to get all of the moments and memories captured, is to go over a wedding day photo checklist with your photographer & videographer month or so before your wedding. That way we know where the importance of photography is and what makes the checklist and what doesn’t!

As always, if you need help feel free to reach out 🙂

Feeling nervous about your wedding photos? Not to fear, walk through a session with me!

Plymouth Engagement Shoot, Plymouth Engagement Photos, Plymouth Wedding Photographer, Duxbury Wedding Photography, Engagement Session with Dog, Beach Photo Shoot, Beach Engagement Shoot, Plymouth Beach Photo Shoot, Plymouth Beach Engagement Photos, South Shore Wedding Photographer, North Shore Wedding Photographer, South Shote Weddings, Boston Photographer, New England Photographer, Destination Photographer

The number one pain point that I hear from a lot of couples is how they are nervous about having their photos taken. I get it, being in front of the camera is usually a new experience and you want to make sure you look your best! So if you are currently feeling this way, don’t worry, you are not alone! I am here to walk you through a typical session with me so that you can feel better about stepping in front of a camera, cause you got this 😉

Before we begin, know that it is 100% ok to feel nervous about having your photos taken. Having your photos taken, especially by someone who is a stranger, can be a very vulnerable experience. It is my job to make you and your partner feel at ease as much as I can! So, I figure I will walk you through a typical engagement session, to get a feel for how I interact with my couples. Let’s begin!

We have arrived!

I like to start off every session, no matter if I’ve meet you in person before or not, with a solid 5-10 minutes of us just talking a little bit before I take any photos. My #1 goal is to make you feel comfortable, and if we rushed into the session I don’t think that would happen right away. I love getting to know my couples and hearing all about them! There is no rush when it comes to having your photos taken and if the photographer is snapping a hundred photos from minute one, before even speaking with you, then it sets the session off on a rushed note and you will see that portrayed in the photos.

Boston Wedding Phorograher, Boston Engagement Photos

Time to get ready!

After our short chat we have typically warmed up to each other, maybe even cracked a few jokes. Laughter goes a long way, so I like to find ways to make the two of you smile and laugh. Now we will begin your photoshoot.

At the beginning of every photoshoot, I will have you stand close to each other, most likely hip to hip, but recently I have loved having my couples stand facing one another. You will hear me say,”Ok, so I am going to check my settings to make sure everything is good. These are just tests, so go ahead and just talk with each other while I set up.”

Graduation Photos, Boston Graduate, Springfield Engagement Session, Springfield Wedding Photographer, Fall Engagement Session, Brimfield State Forrest Photo Shoot

I like to do this because it gives you and your partner the chance to see the camera go up, hear the shutter, but not really be too focused on what you are doing. It sets the tone for that natural candid capture.

Sometimes during these “test” shots, I actually capture some really cute moments between you and your partner. Like Ashley and Josh, in the photo above, you can see her laughing at something that Josh said to her while I was setting up. Because they are focused on each other, I was able to capture that true moment as it was.

And now we begin

Once the test shots are settled, the photoshoot will truly begin. Depending on the level of comfort and ease y’all show in those first moments, I will start one of two ways. The first is to have those more “posed” photos of the couple holding each other close together, holding hands, maybe a few smooches. I do this because, if you are naturally less expressive with one another and need a little more posing help, I can start that from the get go so that you are comfortable. If you and your partner are naturals in front of the camera, I know that sticking you into poses is going to make you look unnatural and uncomfortable, so instead, I will coach you through movement and moments to capture those candid photos of you two in your element together.

In general I like to work you through movements because every person, every couple will have a different way of expressing themselves.

Some of my favorite, more intimate moments are when I ask you two to embrace, cuddle up and hold each other close. Another trick I like to use, is having one of you whisper something into the others ear that they know is going to get them to crack up. It’s gold I tell ya!

For the majority of your session, we will all be chatting back and forth. I like to keep communication flowing because the silence can be deafening and leave the two of you feeling uncomfortable. Once we have gotten into a flow of me helping you into poses, or the two of you moving in and out of them on your own, I will typically ask you two to remember back to those first couple of dates. I love to do this because it can be really humorous and lead to those genuine laughing photos! (aka: candid moments 😍 )

I’m also a big “show and tell” photographer. Meaning I will be showing you the photos from the back of my camera as we go so you can see how adorable you and your fiance are 😉 This is also great, since I can get feedback from you to make sure you absolutely love the photos as we go.

Boston Wedding Phorograher, Boston Engagement Photos

Now we play

This means I like to throw out some experiences and just capture you and your bae’s interpretation of said experiences. A couple of my favorites are,

  • Practice your first dance
  • Go on a little stroll while holding hands
  • Get in nice and close and visualize your wedding day

These are wonderful photography moments because it portrays who you are as a couple. Like I mentioned earlier, no two people are going to move in the same way as you both and it is so unique and memorable.

As we wrap up you session, I like to ask if there are any other poses that you envisioned that we didn’t capture and if so, let’s do them! If you are like me, you have several Pinterest boards full of poses that you have fallen in love with and I want to make sure they are all captured for you in the best way possible. I will say, it isn’t always 100% the same because every photographer is going to have different ways of photographing and different equipment. But I will try my best to get it just right!

Boston Wedding & Event Photographer, Providence Wedding & Event Photographer, Worcester Wedding & Event Photographer

And that’s about it!

Having your photos taken shouldn’t cause you anxiety, so if you are feeling nervous, let’s chat! I will always be up for a phone call or text if you are nervous about a photo session coming up. It is my job as your photographer to make you and your soon to be spouse, as comfortable as possible! And believe me, I work very hard to make sure every couple who works with me has an all time blast, that has them chatting about their session even after it is over!

So, let’s do it!!

Brimfield, Massachusetts Engagement & Graduation Session {Things to do in Brimfield}

I am SO excited to share these with you all! Back in November I ventured west into Brimfield at Brimfield State Forrest to for another photo shoot with Jessie & Chris. I met Jessie at a bridal fair awhile back and we connected right away. These two had not one, not two but three sessions with us before their big day (the more the merrier!) and we can’t wait to document their rustic wedding this fall!

Graduation Photos, Boston Graduate, Springfield Engagement Session, Springfield Wedding Photographer, Fall Engagement Session, Brimfield State Forrest Photo Shoot

This photo shoot was for a special occasion- Jessie graduated from Boston University with a Masters in Social Work and Chris graduated with his journeyman licensing program at Porter & Chester. These two also bought their first home this year so its a big wonderful & exciting year for them 🙂 Congratulations on all the big things happening this year Jessie & Chris!

Graduation Photos, Boston Graduate, Springfield Engagement Session, Springfield Wedding Photographer, Fall Engagement Session, Brimfield State Forrest Photo Shoot

The plan was to take photos of them in their caps & gowns, but once I saw the pretty trees I couldn’t resist getting some of them in regular clothes too. I could seriously photograph these two all day! They are so much fun to hangout with and we always end up laughing together.

Graduation Photos, Boston Graduate, Springfield Engagement Session, Springfield Wedding Photographer, Fall Engagement Session, Brimfield State Forrest Photo Shoot

Plus, they are super adorable. I mean come on. Look at these. so. much. love.

Graduation Photos, Boston Graduate, Springfield Engagement Session, Springfield Wedding Photographer, Fall Engagement Session, Brimfield State Forrest Photo Shoot

Jessie decorated her cap! I always wanted to decorate my cap when I graduated because I love to craft and adore the details, but truth be told time caught up with me and I never did. So now when I see a beautifully decorated cap I just enjoy its beauty. Last year when I photographed a client’s graduation from Suffolk University, I had so much fun checking out (and taking photos of) the creative caps. One was decorated like a pineapple. Anyways… back to Jessie and Chris 😉

Graduation Photos, Boston Graduate, Springfield Engagement Session, Springfield Wedding Photographer, Fall Engagement Session, Brimfield State Forrest Photo Shoot

I am so happy these two did this photo shoot. Graduating is such a huge accomplishment! School takes sacrifice with all the time studying, sacrificing time away from friends, family and loved ones and a big financial sacrifice. Its no secret how hard yet how rewarding it is and once you have a degree or certificate no one can take that away from you. Its a huge season of your life and when you finish, it should be celebrated 🙂

Graduation Photos, Boston Graduate, Springfield Engagement Session, Springfield Wedding Photographer, Fall Engagement Session, Brimfield State Forrest Photo Shoot

Personally, the only photo I have of myself in my cap & gown from college is the one the school took of me shaking the Dean’s hand when getting my diploma (which by the way really isn’t your diploma, its just a placeholder piece of paper since Worcester State University mails them out months later). I have several cell photo photos but if I could go back I would have gotten professional photos since I don’t plan on going back to school and its such a big moment!

I love that Jessie & Chris were in school at the same time cheering each other on.

Things to do In Brimfield, MA

Dean Pond Recreation Area: Enjoy the pond and go for a swim! There are also trails here and a gazebo for some shade.

Cook’s Orchard: Fresh fruit tastes SO much better than imported fruit you would find at a grocery store. ]

Brimfield State Forrest: This is where this awesome photo shoot took place. Its really pretty, and a great place to go hiking, a relaxing walk or a picnic. Have dogs? Great news, Brimfield State Forrest is dog friendly!

The Brimfield Antique Fair : Looking for rustic home decor or a new piece of furniture? The 2019 dates are May 14-19, July 9-14, and September 3-8th

Hiking Thundering Falls Trailhead & Waterfall in Killington Vermont // 48 hours in Vermont in April

Vermont Destination Photographer. April in Vermont, New England in Spring, Snow, Bright Lights Imagery, Vermont Wedding Photographer

Wedding season is coming- its so close and I CAN’T WAIT! I’ve second shot 3 weddings so far this year (gotta get my wedding fix) but am excited to see my Bright Lights Brides & Grooms get married in 2019! With Wedding Season kicking off as well as the weather warming up for more outdoor portraits, its about to get much busier this time of year. I am SO EXCITED to be out with my camera hanging out with my clients and doing sessions vs spending days in front of a computer doing all of the tech things. Chris’s busy season is coming too with his Magic Business and Videography gigs, so we thought it was the perfect time for a little getaway before all the long nights staying up editing kick in.

Vermont Destination Photographer. April in Vermont, New England in Spring, Snow, Bright Lights Imagery, Vermont Wedding Photographer

We choose Killington, VT for our 48 hour geteway for a few reasons:

  1. I’ve never been to Killington before and love exploring new places
  2. It was an hour closer to us than Burlington
  3. We REALLY liked the hotel we found.
Vermont Destination Photographer. April in Vermont, New England in Spring, Snow, Bright Lights Imagery, Vermont Wedding Photographer

We stayed at the Killington Mountain Lodge, which had the most amazing giant outdoor hot tub surrounded by two fireplaces with a mountain view, a heated indoor lap pool (which we used several times and were both sore the next day since we hardly swim), homemade cookies, a cool game room with pool and giant jenga + connect 4, and a continental breakfast with homemade yogurt. Perfect place for a relaxing weekend away!

Vermont Destination Photographer. April in Vermont, New England in Spring, Snow, Bright Lights Imagery, Vermont Wedding Photographer

We went to the Killington Visitor Center and they were so nice and helpful! They told us about Thundering Falls and we are so glad they did! Thundering Falls Trailhead is part of the Green Mountain National Forrest and is an Appalachian Natural Scenic Trail. Chris and I enjoyed the hike and did a little mini photo shoot while we were there. I couldn’t resist when I saw the tall trees! It was chilly but the sun helped keep us warm. We only ran into one other person the whole hike, so going off season has its perks.

The thing that got me started with cameras was nature photography. I got my first camera (a polaroid!) for my 9th birthday. Since I was little I loved exploring the woods behind my house, hiking and everything outdoorsy. I would bring my camera with me often to capture the beauty of nature. Then my senior year of college, after learning how to use a DSLR, I went on a nature and wildlife photography trip to Costa Rica and Panama. I came home and started my business shortly after. I am so thankful for that trip and for learning so much about photography through photographing nature and wildlife. I always love how peaceful hiking is.

The first half of the trail was on a pathway and some water on the side. Looks like in the summer it goes over a stream. After hiking for about a half mile, we saw SNOW on the path! 35 degrees in April, so its not super surprising. The snow on the pathway was nice and soft, easy to hike on. Good thing I brought my waterproof hiking shoes 🙂

Once the pathway ended, we hiked in the woods. The tall trees were so pretty! It was a bit icy here as you can see my slipping a little bit but it just made the hike more interesting 😉 Highly recommend this hike! Its a quick hike to the waterfall so great for everyone. There were other trails too that we would have explored if it wasn’t so icy. Guess we will have to go again 🙂

You will find the entrance to the trail at 2298 River Rd., Killington, VT. It is a short hike to the waterfall!

Our Blog is Back!

Hey there! It’s been a while. A long while. I know what you are thinking… you have so many pretty images… Kayla, why aren’t there blog posts for them all? I’m gonna be real with you.

photo of me by Angela Greenlaw

I smile this big because I love what I do. I learned so quick after going full time with photography almost 3 years ago (time flies!) that it was a lot more work that I thought. When I was a part time photographer and still working full time I still worked hard, but I could pick and choose what I wanted to do work wise with photography. I didn’t realize how much went into the back end when you had to make more $ since your income depends on it. So I worked. and worked. and worked some more. #entrepreneurlife

photo of Chris & I by Mary Decrescenzio

And it worked. And I started getting busier. But busier is hard. Busier takes more time. My once never ending to do list kept getting longer. and longer. Ever been there?

photo of me by Iryna’s Photography

I was overwhelmed but excited and had to figure out new processes, new ways to be more efficient in my workflow. But doing new things take time. Taking on more clients take time. I knew I would never want to take time away from giving my clients an amazing experience, so blogging got pushed to the back burner. But I have good news!

photo of us by Angela Greenlaw

I invested so much time into creating workflows. (using a CRM has giving me so much time back!) and I am excited to say, I am finally going to blog again. I’m going to do it a little differently this time too. So, what will you see on our new blog? The photos of course, but so much more! We will be sharing before & after edits, some personal posts (excited to blog about our recent cruise to Mexico!), and I will be writing articles with tips to help you with all things photography. So, be prepared to see some beautiful things on here. I can’t wait to share them with you!
